most bicycle accidents are caused simply by unawareness on the cyclist's part. it doesn't really matter that much what everyone else is doing, just that you can react to it in time. you should remain aware at all times, tuned into your senses like an animal, thinking of nothing else than what you're doing, what's going on around you, where cars and everyone else is in relation to you. and you should always be cautious, don't take stupid risks, never assume someone in a car can actually see you or is moving around or out of your way. assume the worst and be prepared. be polite and yield to cars, be the first to move out of the way on a sidewalk and so on. never use earplugs or headphones or talk on your phone or text while on a busy street or crossing roads. realize you can very easily die from one little mistake.

you can actually use riding a bike to discipline your mind. you will find that (unless already mentally disciplined) your thoughts tend to wander while riding and you snap back to awareness after a period of daydreaming type thoughts. that is a dangerous way to ride a bike since you could make many mistakes during that lapse of awareness. instead you should try to remain present in your sensory awareness totally, only thinking when necessary (for example, crossing a busy street, you need to be aware of how many cars are coming and determine if you have ample time to cross safely or not) but otherwise just being totally present in your physical activity and sensory awareness, what you hear, see, etc. you should be listening to what's behind you and on your sides and not just have tunnel vision for what's in front of you. avoid alcohol and other stupefying drugs which impair your awareness and have a lasting effect. a lot of bicycle accidents occur later in the evening after people have been hanging out drinking and stuff.
