Sand

what the fuck is with this bullshit that the world is running out of sand? why doesn't anyone disagree that we are running out of sand other than me?

Great thread OP.

Kek, bumping this thread for autistic screencap

i started this thread here because i figured this is totally politically motivated. all research has failed me. please help. any apposing information would be amazing. my fingers are fucking bleeding

there are more grains of sand on earth than the entire sand content in the galaxy

>subject: sand
This is truly the best thread ive seen in this shit hole for the last 6 months.

still confused. how many red pills do i have to take? do they really expect us to believe we are running out of sand? like fuck is this even real anymore lol

It's a scam to make you okay with them hiking up the price artificially.

ok they claim there is only one way to get glass weird science. funny thing is i was taught in school if u melt any thing containing silicon you get glass. even if that isn't true arn't there chemical ways to do it? even if we run out can't we sinthesise it? never knew i could be so mindfucked

Attached: sand4.jpg (700x394, 39K)

not all sand is equal

look m8 we've got some to spare.
Can get you a deal, real cheap like.

Burning of fossil fuels destroys sand. Sand levels are dropping all over the world. All of the sand at the north pole has melted. The scientific consensus is clear.

I know. Didn't realize it wasn't just here in America. Went down to my local mom & pop sand shop and they told me they were out of sand, couldn't sell me any. What's the world coming to?

underrated post

Sandposting sounds fun.

ok now im calling bullshit! we can extract oil from sand lithium plutonium etc etc . what the fuck we cant figure out simple sand? this planet is really fucking stupid

Attached: sand5.jpg (700x394, 67K)

The deserts in Africa are literally fucking expanding, you watched too many movies about the illegal sand trade in poo land my friend.

Sand is made up of tons of tiny rocks. Figuring out what these tiny rocks are made up of can be difficult, given the scale. Stop being a stupid leaf, I thought asians were supposed to be smart.

sand is not tiny rocks

rocks are big sand

holy fuck! it just came to me trump is gonna build the wall outta glass!!!!!

Kek

asian? wtf are u on?

The world isn't literally "running out of sand", just certain kinds useful to construction. Desert sand can be good for glass, but marine sand is better for concrete, due to its irregularity causing the tiny pieces to lock together and create more sturdy concrete. You could make concrete from desert sand, but it would be shitty and you couldn't build much with it. Sand is one of the most used resources on earth, mostly due to its usefulness in construction. Humans go through sand at a faster rate than the natural geological cycle can create it, thus we are "running out of sand", in the sense that the kind of sand that we need for building big fuckoff skyscrapers is getting harder to come by.

the rarity of helium is actually a problem. fuck sand and fuck the beach

It's ok when the finally perfect fusion reactors, they'll have a helium collection crew to go in after and collect it and sell it

Your running out of life, who gives a fuck.

We are running out of cheap sand suitable for concrete. The sand in most deserts is way too smooth to be structurally sound. The sand we like is rough and our rough sand deposits are dwindling. Also, we are using increasing volumes of sand...

China and India, which are leading a global construction boom, are some of the most voracious consumers of sand due to rapid economic growth.

“From 2011 to 2013, China used more cement than the United States used in the entire 20th century,” Beiser told the New York Times.

Because desert sand is almost useless for construction, a lot of nations, like Dubai and Mauritania, which are located in deserts, actually face shortages with the resource.

For example, Dubai imported sand from Australia to build the Burj Khalifa tower, the highest building in the world at 828 metres.

Singapore is one of the largest importers of sand, using it to expand the tiny island nation in physical size by about 24 per cent since 1960, according to Bloomberg. The country uses so much sand that its once-biggest suppliers, Indonesia and Vietnam, have banned exporting there amid environmental concerns.

BIG BEAUTIFUL WALL

“The amount that we are using … it’s tremendous,” he said. “The amount we use every year is enough to construct a wall 27 metres high by 27 metres wide around the equator.”

is that a sand mine

What the hell is this thread
Im getting sleepy

The US needs to become sand independent! No more shitty Chinese or Canadian sand
>If it’s not American “clay” it’s not OK
Keep American sand in America! Who’s wit me?

for fuck sake! even if we run out of sand we can make something simullarr or even superior. i really think the media is underestimating current technology. we are actually attacking quantum shit now. so the only thing that makes sense to me is trumps glass wall.

Attached: sand stupitity.jpg (1242x810, 73K)

This.
Also I believe they will have to develop a sand replacement, or a technology to make desert sand more rough?

And sand deserts are like few in the world anyway. Most of them are rocky and sandless.

Since your post was low effort with no sources, im going to make a low effort response and assume it's the type of sand used in glass production. Most sand in the desert is too round for that.

WHAT THE FUCK
SAGE

ive seen lots of sources. just want one official opposing view link. so far not one opposing view. kinda fucked up dont ya think?

Then why don't we just grind up some windows and concrete to replace the sand we're using? Then we won't run out.

so suave

well we apparently buried most of the glass we used

we're been fighting for the worlds gravel for the past 50 years. Every country in the middle east has such an immense surplus of it but it takes time to topple their governments. Even then there just isn't enough of it to go around.

Maybe will even have to go for china next.
Its just survival after all.
and they got the sands.

There are ways to use desert sand for construction, it is just more expensive... and the tech is in its infacy.

Exploring our oceans:
?Dont you fucking do it.
You know how scientists are always clamoring about how we know more about outer space then we do our own oceans?

Maybe there is a fucking reason for that
1. The ocean sucks
2. Who wants to be around some faggy fish
3. Fuck salt

Let me explain to you something.
We never need to explore our fucking oceans because theres nothing cool down there
So dont you go looking because your going to waste your time my time and humanities time

I dont understand why anyone would wanna go check out that bullshit

If you wanna get the same experience just go to the deepend of the pool or a pond and its the same exact shit just deeper

I repeat there is nothing cool in our unexplored oceans and aint nobody got time to find it out

i guess if we all recycle our bongs we will be ok

Attached: sandbong.jpg (1000x1000, 65K)

Concrete recycling is actually a thing.

We actually are. Recycled sand and concrete are going to be massive sources of new sand

Come here boomerfags, we have a new Q, come get you some bread crumbles!

Attached: BabyBoomers.jpg (950x444, 85K)

recycling is bullshit. obviosly the planet will provide for us (our technology really helps) and when it doesnt want us it will kill us all. there will be lots of sand after that

Attached: sandre.png (2000x2000, 131K)

U mean like Nintendo producing high quality sand... holy fuck they should get on that.

This, i just took some mushrooms... am I still on Jow Forums?

this, desert sand is too round, marine sand is more useful because it locks together better.
we use sand for concrete, silicon, plastic, basically everything, so we are using it up quicker than it is being produced
t.i watched a 3 minute video explaining this to me like i am 5 years old

yes this is still pol. im outta beer . after all the shit online i conclude trump is buildin a glass wall. please send me links with those disagreeing with sand shortage. will make great hangover reading

Attached: sandnight.jpg (299x168, 5K)

hmmm microchips are made of silicon from sand. why isnt the tech companys freaking out?

Attached: sandchip.jpg (1600x1066, 324K)

Problem is that desert sand is not suitable for concreate

This

kek
the majority of the worlds sand is too fine and soft, like what your vagina would be like if you got rid of the sand in it

Are you retarded? 5 mins research would answer this, the sand required for building is coarse because its eroded by the sea. Sand eroded by wind isn't coarse.

sand isnt too soft. peoples heads are

Attached: sandheads.jpg (800x533, 48K)

so we can build this but we cant figure out sand.totally retarted

I have no idea what the fuck OP is talking about but this thread was worth it just for that

Attached: 5FgkaBa_d.jpg (610x960, 135K)

Not "sand".
"Construction-compatible sand" is running out.

Surprisingly, a lot of sand sources mineral composition is super bad to make buildings and it would cost a fuckton ton of money to purify it (which kinda defeat the whole cheapness of concrete).
A lot of shady sand-selling company for example sell beach's sand, whose salt corrode the steel reinforcement inside concrete building, leading to shit collapsing after a few years.
Yes, engineering mean being picky about fucking sand, and it's a becoming a serious problem now.

for those that are confused (i am too) the world is supposidly facing a shortage of sand to make glass from. im shure this is bullshit.the only motivation for this bullshit im convinced is political (smells just like the recycling bullshit to me). either they are distracting us for some stupid reason or trump is building the wall outta glass. either way they think were stupid. running out of glass my ass

Attached: sandwall.jpg (275x183, 4K)

not one debate about the sand shortage online. how can that be? not even a bullshit debate? ive never seen anything not debated. that is why i think the shortage is bullshit.

Attached: sanddebate.jpg (959x368, 119K)

Is it really that expensive to screen larger particles? A 14 year old with a 3.5 yard bucket loader
($20,000+ $100/day maintenance&fuel)
could get 1,000 ton a day with a shaker screen hooked up to a 15KW generator
(maybe $1,500 in steel and parts plus $50 for fuel and maintenance.)
Add to this property tax, quarrying permits, and business taxes,
($1,000/month, call it? Should also cover insurance against EPA and other legal shit you may be liable for)
Shitty pasture land suitable to tear up is about $1,500/ acre.

Total monthly expenses for a 15 acre gravel pit would liberally be $3,000

If I could get a few pennies/ton (after transport costs) I'm looking at a profit.

the "useful" sand is an agglomeration of multiple particle sizes and shapes, and is generally more "jagged", which prevents it from "flowing" readily, and allowing it to be compacted to a surprisingly hard substrate, that makes it ideal for use in applications that require a good set and high compression strength - i.e. concrete, especially in infrastructure. this sand comes from a variety of sources, though river sand beds and manufactured ("crushed") sand are the best.

the "bad" sand is typically desert sand or sea sand, which has a strangely uniform particle size when and is almost completely rounded by erosion. this sand does not set well when wet, flows far to easily to be useful, and doesn't bind well with the cement substrate when put into concrete. Sea sand comes with the additional disadvantage of having some off chemical components that can fuck with certain admixtures of cement.

is this why justin castreau is trying to get rid of the alberta oil (((sands)))? Have i taken the sandpill?

Particle size if a very bad filter for chemical composition.
And any wetness will tend to coat the actual sand particles with the stuff you don't want instead of having anything neatly separated anyway.

It is doable ofc, but it add to the price of something that mostly used because it's dirty cheap yet efficient. This is the equivalent of the first oil crisis but for construction project. Life will continue afterward, but a lot of stuff is going to be less profitable / have to switch to other materials.

you are all fuking puppets! sand shortage really? and the sky is brown the earth is flat and light travels at 5 miles an hour. is the human race really that dumb? no debate no thought just sheep. humanity is fucked

Attached: sandpup.png (319x158, 119K)

Bro, if you pick the wrong fucking sand, you end up with Chinese Tier Construc . . .

Oh wait.

Concrete plants are usually built close to markets, and this may just be an urban thing (if it exists, I've yet to hear about it.) It wouldn't surprise me if LA or New York is running out of readily available aggregate. I just assumed limestone quarrying would tank first.

do we even need glass anymore?

Attached: sandneed.jpg (400x400, 20K)

>just assumed limestone quarrying would tank first

Checked.

A lot of people assumed this. turns out this isn't nearly a problem, especially in the U.S. having over 1/2 the country be a shallow sea filled with prehistoric mollusks for millions of years sort of does that.

and many people assumed that the ideal sand beds would run much deeper than they did, or that manufactured sand would catch up in time.

Then China happened. the amount of concrete the Chinks guzzle down per year now is equivalent to a decade+ of consumption in the US during the 50's and 60's, and 3 years worth of US consumption in 2017. it's unbelievable how much they consume.

China and also a bunch of projects in Saudi Arabia (or Qatar ?) where they decided to use construction-grade sand to make artificial islands, if I remember correctly.

I wasn't thinking about the amount of limestone (theres more than we could ever use) I was thinking about the energy involved in burning it and transporting it to get the slake that makes concrete.

My liberal friends fail to realize that it would take thousands of years for a typical dam (2 million cubic yards of concrete @ 3 megawatt capacity) to offset its carbon footprint compared to burning coal. I just assumed that dumping half it's weight of carbon dioxide in the air would be economically bad as well.

once again. why is there no debate? even hard facts are debated. obvious political bullshit.if not let them have a debate even if is little stupid me debating? how can we have facts without debate? isnt that the way you prove facts? people are even debating basic biology now so why is this denied debate?

Attached: sandwhy.jpg (570x384, 31K)

Cthulhu give up, we are coming for your sand, time of gibs is nao.

we are running out of sand

kek

Oh, make sense. There have been huge advances in clinker production since something like the hoover dam, and additions of naturally cementious minerals such as pozzolan to concrete have dramatically reduced the need for straight hydraulic cement. some concrete formulations call for up to 80% pozzolan additions, which requires no more carbon footprint than the transportation cost. the transportation footprint had reduced dramatically as well since mid 20th century.

>The world is running out of sand

Attached: 67a.gif (284x246, 928K)

cement? most info online point to glass. im shure there are alternative solutions to roads than sand.

Attached: sandcement.jpg (980x551, 67K)

i love this
good one op

it starts like this:
we need to get more money from socialist govs for bs
what about a time is running out
using an hour glass
filled with sand
OH! Let's say we're running out of sand - wow that will be powerful, we'll definitely get the millions of free money then
wow this is so easy
fuck white people
yeah fuck white people
i love jews

I smell a business opportunity, but I think that this shortage may be a bit overblown outside of a few heavily populated areas. Mechanically breaking down gravel into suitable sand can't be that expensive, recycling asphalt may be another option. Minnestoa, the dakotas, and wyoming all have an abundance of lakes, rivers, and streams to supply enough natural high quality natural sand suitable for construction use, with a minimal level of processing.

This also may be the thing needed to get our rail system back in check, also. A high school dropout could figure out this stuff, rent some railcars and ship enough aggregate anywhere thats its needed. A few pennies a ton is all that really needed to offset costs.

hhahhahahaahhaahaaa
fucking hell this is too good
can't work out of this is an anti-anti-meme or not
but i don't have time to worry about it
because we're running out of sand
