True unfortunately, which is why I think the best solution is land value taxation.
While the Land Ordinance of 1785 certainly helped westward expansion, its township system placed little emphasis on commonwealth spaces and sustainable appropriation of woodland. This law in huge part is why Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio have almost no forests anymore. It’s an interesting problem.
