I go camping and hiking with some of my black friends from time to time.
They have commented on this, saying that both black stereotypes around camping and lack of experience are the biggest issues.
The stereotypes seem to revolve around it being 'dirty', too much effort, goofy White people shit, lack of amenities, etc. Poor education (for whatever reason) coming into contact with advertising also means they often see Nature as 'Vacation to Island Resort/Jet set type shit' which precludes many from thinking of the 'woods over that way' as being a place to 'escape'...
The lack of 'experience' comes from their lack of 'means'; as in many live in (mega)cities that they rarely leave. When faced with the New England sprawl (DC to Boston) it's not hard to get the impression that Nature barely exists. Many have misconceptions about how much it costs to leave or go outdoors, many lack a certain 'wonder' at the outside world. In some degree it may come from the lack of Fathers, who are more likely to get a child interested in outdoor activities.
One of my black friends in southern born and bred with a father, and he is very into camping (the more down and dirty, get drunk sleep on ground style) He is also into most 'redneck' shit, is obsessed with fishing (sometimes we go on extended camping trips to fish), guns etc. so the outdoors is no thing to him.
The others have moved from big cities. It was hell at first to get some of them outside, but once they realized the fun most have taken to it. We also live outside of a city in the south so there is pretty much 'outdoors' everywhere.
