People were murdered in the street by the government for refusing to enlist. The same occurred in the South. The north declared war on the south then forcibly conscripted the populace to fight a war they didn't want, suspended habeus corpus and the rights enshrined in the constitution so they could search homes and read mail without warrants and shut down the speech of those who dissented. They then marched south, burned homes and even entire cities, raped and pillaged and destroyed crops and salted the earth to try and induce famine, actions which we would refer to as war crimes today.

Gradual emancipation was both the humane and pragmatic solution to the evil of slavery. Many in the south were already actively involved in doing exactly that, including famous Confederate generals like Lee and Jackson. Instead the Union pulled the rug from under everyone, destroying the southern economy and leaving millions of blacks with no education or job prospects. 150 years later southern states are still poor and blacks are still living in ghettos. Great fucking job, Lincoln.
