Don’t know. Never been there, don’t speak the language and what I know of it’s history comes from movies, so I assume I know nothing. Been told that Japanese people focus heavily on education and appear to be polite, neat, hygenic, efficient and industrious as a whole. Aside from that, I’ve got nothing. None of that is wrong necessarily, but not the whole story. Polite, mostly yes, but it's very homogeneous (duh). Depending on where you are, for example, a white guy is gonna get mixed reactions ranging from overt interest, to stares, to just a face in the crowd, to "go the fuck away, gaijin." Outright hostility is rare. Opinions around military bases range from "fuck off Americans" to "don't go, my bar needs your business!" often in the same day and sometimes from the same person. Overall, Japan is great. Lots of history and a unique culture that should be preserved. There are some problems, like any modern, industrialized nation; not necessarily better or worse than the US. Enjoyed my time and would love to go back for a visit, but there's no place like home.
