I have a ruger lc 380. Bought it for my wife to practice weapons handling with. It was hands down the worst $300 I have ever spent. Both her and my mother hate the thing because its such a little piece of shit with controls that are near inoperable for a novice.

Neither of them produce hydrostatic shock as a wounding mechanism. Neither have remotely close to the energy needed for that. That only happens with rifle rounds, or select few magnum pistol rounds at high velocity.

Any gun is better than no gun, but I think .380 is way too borderline to be considered a self defense round, just underpowered and unreliable in terms of stopping power and penetration through heavy clothing/multiple layers etc. that being said, even if this woman in the OP used a .380, she still was able to keep Tyrone from taking her children and her vehicle. Obviously it would have been better if she killed him, because he was still a threat even after being shot, but it was better than nothing in this case.

I'm sorry user but that's pure confirmation bias at this point. .45 penetration is demonstrably worse than 9mm and will under no circumstances consistently perform better against anything like a skull. Assuming standard loads and similar barrel lengths.

You should look at Dr. Gary Roberts and Dr. Martin Fackler who are trauma surgeons and have done extensive work in ballistics.

Hydrostatic shock is primarily caused by velocity, not mass. .45 ACP is slow as balls. While heavy and effective, it's not nearly large enough to cause any hydrostatic shock with its velocity. The temporary stretch cavities you see in gel tests are just that, temporary. When using quality defensive HPs of the same make there is very little difference in effectiveness and expansion between 9mm and .45ACP (or .40, .357 sig, etc). That said, .45 will be larger and can destroy more tissue. You have to decide if a capacity reduction is worth it for a slight increase in performance (1/10ths of an inch in size). If you get shot 7 times and don't go down, it's not a caliber issue it's a shot placement issue.

I only mentioned 9mm because of the common argument in relation to .45, it's availability and the sheer numbers of capable and reliable platforms for the cartridge. I'm of the opinion that 5.7 is the single best caliber for personal defense currently available, taking into account magazine capacity, muzzle energy, accuracy, platform, flat trajectory, penetration and the fact that it quickly becomes borderline harmless beyond realistic range of engagement.

That's actually backwards if you're thinking of temporary cavitation when you say hydrostatic shock. Ball vs. ball, .45 drills clean half-inch holes through tissue medium while 9mm produces temporary cavitation and yawing effects. However, .45 being more massive means it's less likely to deflect off of bone and its cross section compared to 9mm means it's more likely for a single round to come into contact with something vital. ER docs agree that if you're going to shoot a single round at someone, that .45 is a better bet than 9mm.

Best combo currently is 10mm Auto for firepower, diameter, and magazine capacity. I wish springfield would get off their ass and make an XDm in 10mm. Theyve been twiddling their thumbs about it for more than a year now.

.45acp is more lethal than 9mm but it has the same stopping power. Because its slower and heavier there's less chance of deflection or fragmentation and the target is forced to absorb more of the energy from the shot. Leaving a bigger hole is also better, more organ tissue is destroyed and it causes faster bleeding.
Remember that the amount of pressure exerted on a surface by a fluid increases by the 4th power, due to an increase in radius. In fact an increase of just 2.5mm has a big impact on the amount of pressure it exerts on the surrounding tissues even if its going slower.

The only thing that would make the 5.7 actually work is blowing out the neck on it and chambering it as a 7mm pill. But really the case head is too weak to increase the powder load so you would still get the same firepower as a 9mm. Though it would be more Effective than the smaller round.

Anything smaller than about 6.5mm is a Harassment round that can be life threatening but isnt all that effective. Even 5.56mm has problems with stopping power.

No what you really need to do is take a 5.56mm case and cut it down to about 25-28mm length, then chamber it as an 8mm (.32cal) projectile. Because you could load that up to .357 magnum strength and still put it in an autoloader.

Its around 650-700 foot-pounds (880-950 joules) which is an energy issue not velocity.
Increasing velocity does add energy, but its been proven that a .357magnum and .44 magnum will induce hydrostatic shock.
And of further note if you get shot in the head by a .40 s&w which comes close to that it will cavitate the skull and blow the brains out the back of it. And a .45acp hits slightly less hard than a .40 s&w but because of its larger diameter it will knock a large hole in the skull.
