depends on what you consider as the "wrong side". Two of my grandpa's brothers were part of the Rumänisches Nr. 1 SS division, attached to III. SS. Germanisches Panzer Korps - they both died in the defense of Berlin, in the last Soviet advance before the city fell (we know this because the family found out via some officers that escaped to the West). My grandpa was in Germany at the time when the King decided to turn arms against his allies - he was expelled from the country, only to be captured by the advancing Soviets when he was just about to reach the Kingdom of Romania. He was forced to fight up until Prague as part of the Soviet-Romanian joint divisions and when the war ended he was labeled as a "traitor of the country" for fighting on the Eastern Front and got subsequently arrested and imprisoned for 10 years (labor camps specially made for the bourgeois, royal officer corp, Iron guard sympathizers, former non-communist politicians etc). He eventually got out, but could never get a job + all of his lands and titles were confiscated. Heck, my mum and her brothers coudln't even enroll in University during the 70's and 80' because the family was considered "impure for the new socialist state".
My mum's entire family was completely decimated by the war, mainly because they were evenly split between monarchists and Iron guard sympathizers. When the commies came, a lot of them either ended up in labor camps or home imprisonment - and a couple left the country.
My great grandfather stormed the beach of Normandy. He said the second the doors opened on the boat, they were dropping like flies. He made it to the beach, but then got hit by a mortar or something. He was knocked out and woke up in a Belgium hospital where they pulled shrapnel out of his arm and stomach. Surprisingly, he didn't lose any limbs. He was an alcoholic afterwards though.
Oh, and during his stay in the hospital, he nailed one of the nurses there. My great grandmother busted him sending money back to France because the nurse had kids. Lmao.
