So explain to me the soil depletion issue. My understanding is it was a legitimate concern 20 years ago but modern tilling techniques and land set aside programs have eliminated much of these concerns.

It unironically starts with yourself. The first thing is to discipline yourself in all ways. Discipline yourself such that you can impose your will upon yourself. This goes together with everything else you need to do.

You need to get decently fit. You might know the drill: You don't need to be a bodybuilder, but you need to be at some level of physical fitness such that common tasks you might need to do aren't beyond your capability.

Getting some life skills is similarly important. Your brain is a huge asset. Here's one thing I'm personally doing - learning a bit of chemistry for useful chemicals. You can find a very basic recipe for smokeless gunpowder on the internet for example. Will it necessarily come into play? Who the fuck knows, the way things might work out you might die by a bomb missing its target the first day of it. On the other hand, it could make a huge difference.

Another thing would be to learn machining, and when I say learn machining I would honestly mean going all the way from doing it with hand tools to the best you can reasonably afford. Machinists even now are valuable as fuck, post-collapse and with the proper tooling they might as well be unicorns since in the initial phase, it's likely mass production is going to grind to a halt.

What else, live in a home - you're in Russia so land and housing should be reasonably affordable. Commie bloc apartment is not going to cut it. If you have to, do the commute. If you can get arable land then that's even better. A good investment would be solar panels/batteries, but it might be worth holding out a couple more years on that since they're still getting cheaper (they're getting to the point where they're cheaper than grid price though). Maybe get a gasoline generator too, but it might not be worth it price-wise. Do some math for the prices though, it varies by place.

Owning a gun would be great, but is hard. You can try learning how to make them, or printing schematics (see machining)
