Let's face it, there's no reason for civilians to own assault rifles. They are weapons of war and they're sole purpose is to "assault" a fortified enemy position during a time of war. Not something that has any business being on the streets in the U.S.
Now, before you get angry and start whining at me, understand that I have been hunting a few times years ago. So I understand the reason we have the second amendment. That being said, I have also fired an AK-15. I can safely tell you that there was no redeeming aspect of that experience. It was extremely loud and left my shoulder hurting the next day. Not exactly fun and not something a civilian would have any use for.
The fact is that this nation has a gun problem and it needs to be solved. Most of you will argue that confiscation won't do anything to solve the problem. Well, you know what else won't solve the gun issue? Doing nothing like we are right now. It is much better to try and do something that may or may not work than to just hide behind the Constitution and shrug your shoulders like the NRA.

Furthermore, your entire argument is illogical in typical leftist fashion - what I propose won't work, but it is better than doing nothing....hurr durr. Making a declarative statement like there is no reason to have a semi-automatic rifle is also bogus. If the militia is made up of citizens, and we are supposed to defend our country if it ever came down to it, then we MUST have arms equivalent to possible attackers. This, at the very least consists of semi-automatic rifles. If you truly ever hunted, then you would know that an AR-15 is an excellent platform for many different types of game.
