In school, like any other kid we get told how the ebil nazis burned freedom of speech along with these books. But when I asked about the content of these books the teachers or relatives couldn't answer and said it's not important if freedom of speech was at stake.
To that I replied that they sounded like the lawyers in congress defending the porno industry under the guise of freedom of speech.

As every Nazi story they got taken out of context for western propaganda reasons. What got burnt was a very small amount of porn literature and Marxist manifests in a couple of events. Nothing regular, not all jewish books were burnt, puerly symbolic

Of course they weren't the same "in principle" because the Germans burned books that were harmful to the wellbeing of the German people while the books the Allies destroyed were beneficial to their health and confidence as a people.
My understanding is that various student groups burned books during the Nazi Regime.
It's also interesting to note that the US army burnt more books during the post war period.
