The economy of the Polish People Republic was going downhill at the beginning of the 80s. Poland was also a country that had constantly general strikes and social unrests (see the one in 1956 and 1980)

This is actually a real phenomenon. People who live under oppressive conditions when young are often nostalgic in their later years. I observed this with Greeks from Turkey being interviewed about their lives at the turn of the 20th Century. They expressed devoted loyalty to the Ottoman Empire and blamed Armenians for their genocide lol.
