I'm a sort of skeptic/atheist who is trying to come into the fold. I have been reading the Bible and attending weekly mass for the last month. Mass today was packed full of people, well beyond normal for this small town. Today there was an infant that was baptized while I was there, and I just kept thinking about how that child will grow up in a community of wholesome people like this. I can't say that I wasn't a little envious, as I never had much of a faith tradition of my own.

I really need to read Francis Collins, because coming from a scientific background, I want to be able to experience that same sense of 'knowing' that I see around me, while not shortchanging the gift of reason by simply saying the right words.

I prefer the evening service because there's less people and I'm socially retarded and go into panic mode when the pastor says take a minute to greet those around you.

I just moved to Portland (Oregon). I haven't found a church in the area yet, and I know I should especially because I suspect that finding a well-grounded and reverent church in a city with government support of everything from public sexual deviancy to Antifa will take time.

Any anons in the general PDX area have some pointers? As a general rule I like Baptist churches, my parents are nondenominational but all my grandparents and extended family are Baptists.

Our prayers go out to you in your journey. I can personally say there's no better feeling than knowing without a doubt that Jesus Christ is in control of everything and will never turn His back on you. Our Creator truly is wonderful and all wisdom ultimately stems from Him alone. I would humbly suggest you get a Holy Bible and read through where the Spirit guides you. It doesn't have to be cover to cover. The Gospels are my personal favorites. Christ has all the answers you're looking for and if you're still unsure maybe asking someone in a position of authority will help you understand His word. Best of luck, user. Thank you anons. I appreciate it. It is going to be a long journey for someone like me. Funny though how life hits you with new perspectives and understandings. It is both ironic and with a sense of shame how I used to act toward religion. I even have signed copies of two Richard Dawkins books on my bookshelf. I found a sense of my own arrogance in them, but never fulfillment.
