Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

This is my take on them and it ain't pretty. JK Rowling is a lower class woman who hates her own class and worships the British upper class.
If you look at the essential drama of Harry Potter, what is it? Harry's parents have been murdered, so he can't attend this school for "wizards". What do the children do at this school for wizards? They learn arcane languages in an ancient and august setting. These arcane languages give them mysterious powers. IOW, they're upper class children that go to Eton and Harrow and learn Latin and Greek and this endows them with the magical power to ascend into the elite classes.
Harry's tragedy is that he has been unjustly cast down into the proletariat a hideous fate. His adoptive family are lower class with wretches accents, bad clothes, treacherous sly idiotic personalities and hideous genetics. They're despicable. Harry's quest is to ascend back into the elite classes of Harrow and Eton which he has been unjustly denied.
Thus I'm always amazed when I see British kids of Hindu or Chinese extraction eagerly embracing this shit. It's like American niggers wishing they could grow up to join the KKK. haha.
