Both sides are different takes on liberalism, the ruling ideology of America. If you want to understand it then study the history of liberalism.

The supreme court famously ruled 9 times that the executive branch was overreaching its authority while Obama was in office. This became a conservative meme for years while the silent truth was eight of those nine overreaches were Bush era republican policies that Obama felt he didn't have the authority to end without the fulk support of both sides of the aisle and because a terrorist attack after ending the Bush era policies would have tanked the democrats in the midterms.

No one is claiming both sides aren't shit. But one side doesn't smell like roses just because they are backed by a constituent who would let them do anything as long as abortion is an issue.

That is all American politics is about abortion. No other issue has as much political weight in the ballot box.

Republicans: favor smaller government, want less laws and regulations, tend to favor hands-off economics or protectionism/American system. A majority of whites and rural people vote this way, including most Christians and Southerners.
Democrats: big government, Keynes economics, gibs, and bleeding-heart issues. Made up of minorities and coast dwellers.

So the differences lie in which races and classes of people get to keep money. Conservatives try to keep as much to themselves (or possibly to the most wealthy) and liberals want to use everyone's money to help other people (or possibly only help minorities)?

And with Bush it made you a terrorist sympathizer who wasn't a real patriot. In personal experiences, far more liberals disagreed with Obama than conservatives with Bush, especially after the whistleblower/Snowden controversy.

Both sides have become nasty catering to bullshit social issues like race and abortion that should have always remained state issues given how our country was established. Until there's a third constitutional convention (and I dread that say) we are still a union of states, not a cohesive government. And the executive branch has no place interfering with that, republican (forcing state and city police to do the work of federal agents) or democrat (forcing welfare programs on States paid for by other states).

Depends on where you lived. I moved from CA to SC while Obama was in office. Went from no one ever discussing politics ever to hearing weekly about what a nightmarish hellscape America had become under Obama.

Which I thought was weird given none of his policies had any real impact in SC where the governor and senator kept blocking everything the feds tried to do.
