It's not really complacency so much as nimbyism. You have to bear in mind that individualism runs deep in English people, running right the way back to the migration of the Anglo-Saxons. I do not mean to excuse this of course, this is obviously not a good thing in isolation, but I do believe this facet of the English character is what made Britain so good at creating independent colonies. People could become attached to their local land and people without needing to have a blood connection to it.

We should not have colonised America. It was a mistake and our Colonial descendents will be rightfully punished.
