When you run a trade deficit with a country, of course you can win a trade war. The corporatists just say you can't because they don't want to lose their corporate welfare gibs, like outsourcing jobs, skirting environmental standards, and imaginary stock profits.
Well they can always just start dumping their us treasury notes. Could fuck us pretty bad, but the fight would still definitely be worth it. In the end, China has to bend the knee or die. Their only hope is the left here trying to save them with their lies.
Here’s an important point being overlooked: China’s stock markets are mainly owned by their middle class as opposed to the US where it’s mostly the elite class. Trump is tightening the screws on China which will lead their markets to dump even more than they have already, and you’re going to see a lot of juicy civil unrest over there once everybody’s rice portfolio is obliterated. On the other hand, since China only imports about $150B from the US, they cannot match the new tariffs. The worst that China can do is dump their US Treasurys at discount price and cause a huge yield spike which will kill US markets which are heavily cooked up on debt - debt that is getting more expensive too with a rising dollar and rising interest rates

It works because most of our wealth is generated internally. Only about 10% of our GDP is from exports to other countries, so tariffs only cut into our GDP by a few percent at worst. For countries that need us to buy their products (like Germany that gets 46% of its GDP from exports), our tariffs are about way more destructive and the pain hits almost immediately.
Strong chance the Chinese government will freeze selling in their stock market, at least among their own population. No reason why they couldn't just do that.

Also I expect that the Chinese have some pretty devastating ploys they could pull. It's true that the U.S. has the power to win a trade war, but it will be brutal, and I'm not sure future U.S. politicians have the sack for it.
First of all, let's define the Trump Doctrine: Political Isolationism, Autarky, and Absolute Advantage in Trade. Trump doesn't want to involve America in the world's wars and politics, he wants America to be self-sufficient in all respects, and he wants a level playing field in trade again where the U.S.'s natural advantage in terms of resources, industry, and incentive structure will guarantee economic success.
Like previous Doctrines, the Trump Doctrine will rely on future administrations to buy into it to guarantee its success. If Trump doesn't get re-elected, its over. But even if he does get re-elected, we can't win a true "trade war" with China in 6 years. It's just like with the USSR; it takes decades for our policy to cause their crash. With China, it will take decades of politicians being vigilant against Chinese economic meddling in order to guarantee the U.S.'s victory.
Furthermore, the Chinese own a lot of the U.S.'s debt, along with a lot of our cash. They could, for example, release all of the U.S. dollars back into the U.S. economy, causing inflation to rise quickly. They could sell all of their U.S. treasury bonds, which would cause the price of U.S. bonds to drop in an instant. These two actions would be devastating for the U.S. economy, and probably trigger a recession. It would also trigger a crash in China.
At the end of the day the U.S. is their biggest customer. If we go down, so does their economy. But if a future president steps in and isn't willing to uphold the Trump Doctrine, all the economic hardship we might face is for naught.

A trade deficit doesn't mean you are losing money. It only means the other country is giving you stuff on the cheap, which makes it worth it to buy with money. Basically if people are willing to hand over cash for said goods, then that means for them the goods are more valuable than the cash, so more wealth for us.

The problem is that a banking/trading holiday can stop price depression caused by panic selling by giving time for panic to subside, but can't stop losses caused by real value decreasing. Eventually the freeze has to be lifted, and then the stock will move toward a price dictated by it's dividends and underlying value. If those have declined, a freeze will only delay the losses.
