I played Magic as a awkward 90s kid. There was a period (4e-5e) where they hit the mainstream and were inexplicably "popular" for a while. The personalities dwindled though until only the most toxic were still there: delusional, narcissistic, predatory - basically the losers turned into douche-bags through success in a tiny, useless, niche hobby). I didn't want to deal with that and stopped playing, but continued collecting. Then I fell out of it as I grew up. A couple of years ago I played a Draft tournament with some friends of a friend and found that those negative, broken psyches were still a big part of the scene, but now aged 15 years. I'm not surprised at all that the scene has problems with sex offenders.
