The thing is, China is already putting several east African states into debt slavery to China via high interests loans for infrastructure investment. Then when the Chinese companies come to build this infrastructure for the country, they bring Chinese workers and experts rather than hiring locally so the African country doesn't actually get an economic boost or more employment. Then when the country can't pay the loan, the Chinese take their payment in territory. That is why China already has a naval base in Djibouti (near a very valuable sea lane) and in Pakistan (again near another sea lane). They are slowly using this tactic all over Africa and central Asia as part of their One Belt One Road Initiative.

France on the other hand never actually left Africa. Sure they gave de facto independence to their former colonies but then turned around and had those former colonies attach the value of their currency to the French currency (intially the franc now the euro) so they still hold total economic control over all former colonies. Hell the French treasury is what actually controls the economic decisions for a lot of Africa. That is also the reason why the French Foriegn Legion deploys to Africa so much. They aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They are securing their neo-colonial territories. The French are actually some of the few people I respect and they will actually be on really solid ground in the new global order.

The Chinese realize this as well, hence they are trying to modernize their army as fast as possible and develop force projection abilities. Their biggest obstacle is that they have no unimpeded ocean access. They are surrounded on all sides by island countries that are hostile to them. Of course they are trying to win over/buy out these enemies (or at least their valuable ports) the same way they have been taking over central Asia and Africa with varying success. As of late, the have been starting to get chummy with India despite their historical animosity to one another and almost going to war just a few months ago. Another example of this is Duterte in the Philippines and though I like Duterte for his hard line stance on drugs, he is being played by the Chinese like a fiddle and with the Philippines soon to be in the Chinese sphere of influence, that is a large hurdle cleared for China.

Their big problem is that now America (Trump specifically) noticed their weakness and these tariffs and future US policy (should we continue on the path we have started ourselves on) will permanently neuter this current iteration of a powerful China. As it is now, China cannot compete on a level playing field with the rest of the world and America is doing everything to force China to play fair. Perhaps if Hillary got elected and things were allowed to keep going for another 5-10 years, China would become a credible threat, but what seemed so sure not too long ago is in jeopardy. Believe me, Trump is serious about this. His demands include China no longer classifying themselves as a developing economy in the WTO (one of their most infamous exploits) and threatening to use SWIFT against China (basically our biggest economic stick we could ever use on another country short of blockading it with our Navy).

I think it's just a big misunderstanding on both sides that fruited in distrust. Of course, due to the current status of what a lot of slandering that's been happening towards the Chinese, they are being overly defensive as to not hurt their international reputation any more. I believe that the nuance of China being a threat is the root of all the distrust. They use words like "Aggressive", instead of more positive words like "Determined". Absolutely not. Europe is a mess. Most of the EU countries are ready to collapse financially at any moment (especially Italy and Greece) and the only thing keeping them alive is Germany. Germany is the economic engine of the EU and 84% of their GDP depends on exports (mainly to the US). Attacking Germany alone with tariffs would be enough to severely weaken the entire bloc if not kill it off entirely. The only countries in Europe that are safe are the UK and France.

Deutsche Bank has absorbed nearly all it could from the rest of the EU countries and Germany's rapidly aging population is the straw that will finally break the camel's back.
