And then there is showing respect when respect is due, because you know it's the right thing to do. (or you could just say he was kissing his ass/catching them off guard)

You're supposed to salute officers of other countries' militaries. Trump went to the NK General to shake the man's hand, and the General saluted Trump (because Trump is our Commander-in-Chief, so he's a military officer). Trump returns the salute, which is what you're supposed to do. It's literally the most common occurrence for military people to salute each other, and that's what happened here. The lower-ranking officer salutes first, and the higher-ranking officer (Trump) returns it. It's a courtesy given to any military official from any country.

Salutes literally started as a way for rivals to acknowledge each other, you hack. You raise the visor of your helmet so that you can look your opponent in the eyes before your joust. It goes all the way back to the days of chivalry. We provide 21-gun salutes for other countries' ships too, are you going to whine about that?
It's in military protocol to salute superior officers from foreign militaries. I don't need to cite an example specifically because it's in the fucking etiquette books. It's basic shit. Most of the foreign officers you salute will be from allied nations because you'll have the most opportunity to be with them in a non-combat situation on a joint base or at a formal event together. But if you're at an event with rival military officers, you pay them every respect you pay your own officers. These are traditions that go back centuries
