I partly disagree.
A large number are set up to be turned around on that point of view. Or aren't defended.

If i had to guess, I'd say that a very smart group of anons are behind it, they know that new blood is critical to actually shifting opinions.

The slide posters within a thread arguable serve a purpose as well, they are often times a counter argument and are often times debunked.
The damaging ones are the (You) seaking posters that don't offer anything of value and the "roll" posts (my least favorite).

I just started this thread to see if there were other signs of detecting shills. I see your points on trying to gain new users. I did not want to be viewed as a shill.

There are good topics, and any "shill" topic can easily be morphed into a good direction.
Unless there is a better discussion to be had than race, gender, state of society, economics, and politics then most "shills" are doings Gods work and bringing in new recruits to spread the good word.

I do this sometimes, start a thread and then not post in it. Either I fall asleep, go do something else or the thread is moving fast enough that I don't need to post.
