Abroad it is often still the case where US companies and government grants enable research and production. Drugs are manufactured more cheaply in other countries only because of local government subsidy, price controls which force manufactures to charge greater expenses elsewhere (with irony, the US is heavily effected by this), and ignore patent laws to produce US drugs with no license. Europe is most guilty of the former, third world countries such as china and Russia and much of asia are most guilty of the latter.
If there is one thing Trump is consistently correct is asserting, it is that the world takes great advantage of US generosity and pastreluctance to confront the unfair practices of all partners and allies. Your politicians who look to Europe and ask why people would not prefer to live as Norwegians and Swedens or Dutch and Deutsche are either laughably ignorant or actively dishonest because the state of these places is itself reliant of US charity and economic victimization.
