It's not from the aircraft impact, it's from the collapse. Anything that gets knocked out to the side has basically no counteracting force to keep it traveling with the rest of the collapsing building. So if a piece of building collapses outward instead of inward, it's just going to break off and fly off and accelerate downward under gravity with whatever horizontal momentum it had. Each building had a ~1 acre footprint, that's about 60 meters each side. And observations of the plumes of debris ejected during the collapse suggest most of the heavy debris stayed within sort of a building's-width or so of the faces of the tower during the collapse. So just as a back of the envelop calculation, say the collapse was ~9 seconds, that's 6.7 m/s or about 15 mph.
That's really not particularly fast. Just the force of colliding with other debris could easily push something away with enough force to hit that speed.
