This phenomenon goes way back. To show interest and fascination for other cultures used to imply you were well travelled, in colonies or other nations collonies. Sweden, like many other nations, held the British Empire in extremely high regard and absorbed their cultural interest all the way up to its collapse.
Notice I said fascination and not admiration, two very different things. Most of the time other cultures were seen as primitive and curiously superstitious which was in direct contrast to Western culture which in comparison was refined and Godly.
