They voted for security in the positions their parents bequeathed to them, suppression of competition between themselves and the younger generation, and making that younger generation, with one hand tied behind their back, compete to serve them.

There is no individual's success that can't be prevented by society. Society chooses how many winners to allow, who to kneecap, and when to turn a blind eye to cheating. When the game is rigged, it's not "making excuses" to point that out.
