I admire your spirit and historical knowledge but this worked in an era where lands were awarded or given to those worthy of titles and land, or gained through mediocrity and business. If the requirement today was to own land, then the only "skill" needed to vote is the ability to buy land thus the price of land would just shoot up as everyone grabs an acre here and there for the ability to vote.

Those married with children, or taxpayers are a better requirement and more relevant in 2018.

There should be an exam that voters need to pass before each election to ensure that they are sufficiently educated about the issues to make an informed choice.

The problem here is it would be too easy to manipulate the id and/or testing system. I can see why the dems fight it like the plague a). Because they rely on minorities voting several times in key counties and b). Because of Republicans' record on gerrymandering (aka manipulating laws for election advantage).
I'm in favor of both testing, civil service requirements and voter IDs but it can't be accomplished in a republic like ours. It could only work in a more authoritarian state that still elects the leader's successor.
