Tourism was very big before the 80s, before the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, and kicked off the massive instability in the region which persists to this day.

Its especially good for mountaineering. Theres a place up north where you can look out of the window at the horizon and see like 7 top-tier world class Mountains to climb together.

Food is pretty good as well.

I've been near the K2 mountain. Northern Pakistan is like Swirtzerland/Bavaria.

Maybe in a decade or two things will be better and it will be easier to travel there. I would visit for sure.

Islamabad is boring. Nothing to do. Its basically a hub for good hotels for people who plan to go north to the scenic areas. But close to Islamabad is the hill station of Muree about an hour away. Its kind of been overexposed and is overcrowded nowadays, so I suggest crossing it to Nathia Galli hill station. Its beautiful, and relatively sparsely visited, like Muree used to be at one time.

Islamabad is where most of the foreigners are, since that's where the embassies are. So security is tight. Probably the one city 100% safe for foreigners. And maybe Lahore comes second.

As a foreigner going to Islamabad and maybe Lahore is safe I would say. Lahore has a ton of places to see. Mix of old Lahore which is a millenia old city, colonial parts from bongs, and modern parts.
