As atheists we believe in a single life, one in which we must live to the best of our ability because their is nothing else. However, I would say that you want to live a life that is happy and healthy. A faith community serves this. Christians on average live 4 years longer than non-Christians, and suffer far lower levels of mental illness, anxiety, depression, and express less self-damaging behaviors.

Therefore, for purely selfish reasons you should join a faith community. This was how I started, as I too am a natural skeptic, working in the sciences. That said, once you are taken in by a community you will likely understand the wholesomeness that comes with a faith tradition. However, you are the one who must choose to take that first step, as "many are invited."

Thank you. I appreciate the advice. I really want to be a part of a faith community, that's a big reason for wanting to reconnect. I'm just honestly a little bit scared. I haven't been to a church in a decade, and I've never been to a Mass. It just seems really intimidating. I feel like they're all going to know what a massive sinner I am, which also seems silly to me? I mean, it's especially stupid of me because another big reason I want in is to participate in reconciliation. I've got a lot of guilt that I can't deal with.

Everyone you will find at Mass is a sinner, user, some probably even made worse sins than you accuse your self of doing. That is the great thing of the Sacraments though, Baptism will remove all your present sins, and every confession after that removes further sin. God wants you to come to him and remove the stain of sin from your soul.

If you feel intimidated, when you go to mass, you can stay sitting in the corner observing in silence as the service goes. With time, you might even feel inspired to actively participate in it. And when you feel bold enough, talk to the priest that you wish to convert.
