I don't know the facts of your case or the law involved. But I can say with certainty that public defenders are well meaning but overworked. They graduate from worse law schools than the prosecutors, and grossly underfunded. In short, get a second opinion. Come up with the money and get a consult with a good lawyer with good reviews. Even if he gives you the same bad news, you can make your decision with peace of mind. Then again he may be more willing to be more aggressive and to invest the time to beat the case that a public defender just can't. Good luck.
