The Democrats are stuck in a corner in 2020 because they're being pressured from several angles. The Boomers that run the party and have historically dragged the party to the right want to make a play for Trump's disaffected white voters because they've been trying to make that play for 30 years. They assume that they have the black and Latino votes in the bag and have written off the "youth" vote.

Unfortunately, for the Democrats, blacks and Latinos are getting hip to always being last in line and the "youth" vote has been disenfranchised for so long that they have kids who are about to also be the "youth" vote. The only way to get those voters out is to swing left and get aggressive, but thats going to scare a lot of the suburban donor class and its going to close the door on the mythical White Union Vote.

In that setting, Maxine's aggro is her biggest selling point. If the Democrats think that 2020 is a long shot, their best plan of action is to take anti-Trump centrists for granted, give up on center right independents, and try to provoke turnout in low-turn out demographics.
