One of my coworkers, a guy who crushes up painkillers and snorts them while driving a truck complained to me that the guy at a place he was dropping a delivery off at had overdosed and was unconscious when he got there and he had to call the office to find out whether he could make the delivery even though the recipient would not wake up. Fortunately the guy didn't die.

Despite what few may say, junkies are not good people. I've worked with many throughout my career. They only care about the getting high at the expense of their family, friends, job, ect... They're manipulative and scheming, doing anything to get another dose. And when you do send them to rehab they relapse almost instantaneously.

By every measure of humanity, these are not good people. Maybe they once were, but to let them die getting their last fix would be most humane. They take too much of a toll on our healthcare system and infrastructure.

And I agree that over-prescription is probably a large issue contributing to it, and after treating patients for about 7 years now, its a double edged sword: patients don't want to endure pain and demand you give them narcotic analgesics or your "patient satisfaction" scores go down; so they get them after discharge and don't take the medication properly and just keeping popping them and then soon they develop dependence.

But just like alcoholics, junkies are often the poor and I dare-say subhuman members of our society and culling them is natures way of getting them out of the gene pool.
