Little known thing but doctors of there time growing up told parents to not give their child any real form of affection and to beat their children. This of course led to a generation of kids growing up suppressing their emotions, which of course led to violent outbursts and a society that viewed expressing any emotion that wasn't happy or anger as wrong.
Now where they more "hardened"? - Nah, they were just emotionally repressed shells. There are plenty of pictures of Wehrmacht soldiers crying like babies, shell shocked and PTSD'd. Same for every other group that fought.
Masculine - Looking back with rose-tint glasses you'd think so, but there was plenty of fags, wife-beaters, and homeless. The only difference being they were more physically fit since the work they did then was more physically intense.

How about this one here, where most of the people here are in the same uniform, but they all look young, normal and frankly if you put them in modern day fatigues, wouldn't look out of place at all.
