It is beyond me how someone can be so sheltered that they take offence from being either called sir or ma'am which are supposed to be extremely polite. I'm fast enough to use the "gender neutral" term and pronoun for everything (and I say "they" and use the masculine or neutral if the word sounds natural i.e. "chair" or "businessman" if I'm talking about someone who I don't know the sex of) but if I know the sex of the person I'm talking about then it's correct to use the proper word to describe them (businessman becomes businesswoman and chair becomes either chairman or chairwoman).

Language, almost by definition, is not gender neutral.
There are male nouns, and female nouns. It's in the roots of all Romance languages.
This is most obvious with the articles la [female noun] and le [male noun].
Also, the 1-drop rule is in effect. When refering to a group of people, so long as at least one of them is male, the proper term is "guys" when referring to the group.
Now, let's bring back the conventions of Ms. and Mrs. with additional shame pointed at the unmarried/divorced women.
