TWA Flight 800 Anniversary

What really happened? I was just a kid at the time so don't know much about it.

Was there a cover?

What are the popular conspiracy theories?

Happened 21 years ago today, in 1996

Some people believed they saw a missile hit the plane

Missile. A French dude photographed it, French newspapers printed the photo.
US Navy fuckup probably. Not the first one, they have also shot down Iranian airliner in 1980s.

By some, you mean the 100+ FBI interviews?

IT WAS A FUKING MISSILE.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just looking into it now and reading up

Attached: newspaperad.jpg (640x362, 110K)

Bump for missile!

The official determination was that the plane was brought down by frayed wiring in the fuel tank, and it was. The frayed wiring was caused by a missile.

A depressed seaman on a Navy ship near the airport fired a missile at it. It was covered up for obvious reasons.

huh? never heard this one. Any more details or that's all you know?

Accidentally tagged with guided missile during live fire exercise.

It happened and flew over my house

Why would they fire a missile at it? By accident?

why would the gubmint cover it up? Think about it. If the navy accidentally fired a missile at the plane (which it did not btw) they would have prosecuted whoever did it in front of the whole world. They wouldn't cover it up, you fucking conspiracy theory retards.

Obviously

I mean the federal government was out of control in 1990s

Attached: Waco.jpg (1200x800, 154K)

Yes it was an accident but they still covered it up

what ship was it then? Got a name?

UPS 74F First Officer reporting in to talk a bit about TWA800. I've read reports about the suggested and concluded causes of the incident, as the tragedy left lasting impacts on procedures for long ground holds, time spent with the pack off, and flying with low quantities of fuel in the 74's cwt.

Long story short, the 74's packs are located beneath the center wing tank. Intakes for the packs can be seen forward of the main gear nearly right under the wing root. To save on maintenance costs and decrease the time it takes for N2 to rise on engine start (bleed air is not being pulled off the APU for packs, thus more of it is available for the engines) TWA 800s packs had been left off during an excessive hold time on the ground and kept off for engine start. When the packs had been turned on, the cabin air temperature had been high due to the pack off time. The packs generate heat from operation like any machine, and some of the heat was transferred to the center wing tank, resulting in fuel in the tank heating and generating a fuel-air mixture within the tank. Old FQIS wiring that had not been checked or repaired due to the difficult maintenance procedure of working on and inside the CWT was exposed outside of the insulator and generated a spark within the fuel tank, igniting the fuel air mixture. A sad story. My first CFI was a TWA pilot... knew people on that plane. He became very sad when I asked him about it.

Nah dude, I saw an obscure video on YouTube, it was a missile. Do YoUr ReSeArCh

It was a missile. It’s even on film.

It’s not obscure, it was a missile. Not deliberate but an accident. Things like this have happened before like when the US navy shot down an Iranian civilian airliner accidentally. Accept they had to admit that one although they never apologized (just gave them some money)

>HUNDREDS of eyewitnesses report seeing hundreds of missiles launched EVERY DAY as they struggle to understand how viewing angles work

Missile.

>IT WAS A BOMB GOYIM DONT U UNDERSTAND

packs are air cycling machines. They're responsible for providing pressurization and air to the cabin, and operate from engine or APU bleed air.

Want the truth? Aliens put it on the moon to remind us who is in charge

>left packs off during ground hold
>took off without the packs on
You sound retarded.

imho...NICE SHOT NAVY ! Clinton era super efficient cover up.

jews did it

YYYYou mean the CIA and the FBI (under CLINTON) both lied to the American people? C'mon Jow Forums....that just can't be !

This. The official exploding gas tank narrative is beyond fucking stupid.

Has never happened before or since !

Were you prior military? I have my private, Ive been working on the ramp at UPS And it’s made me want to get my other ratings done.

Then show me the picture. No picture = no proof. Dont say, "look it up", this is an imageboard, post the fucking image.

Nothing that has ever happened has ever happened before or since

Packs are kept off during long holding periods on the ground because it puts strain on the APU and ECS systems to run them.

Planes take off with packs off all the time. It's a very common procedure in the cargo 74 world when we're operating near MTOW. The packs bleed air from the engines, resulting in a loss of thrust. We usually calculate .3-.5% additional N1 available when packs are off for departure. We will also rarely depart with one pack operating receiving bleed air from the APU.

youtu.be/Ppp5eO4uGzI
A pump running in an empty tank can cause a fire. That's why nearly every plane now has a nitrogen gas system in the fuel tanks.

No, you don't turn the air conditioning off when you're sitting on the ground. No, you don't do unpressurized takeoffs, you do bleeds off takeoffs, yes, but not unpressurized ones.

This has been debunked, and not by Snopes. The electrical installation in/around the fuel tank was very low voltage, milliwatts. Couldn't have been the cause of an explosion.

> the federal government was in of control in 1990s

Fixed. What happened is forensics advanced a huge in the 90's, and shit that usually covered things up stopped working when information was distributed on a near instant basis. They adapted and now work backwards. It is far easier to manipulate data then it is to fake results to make the data appear legit. So now they say fuck it and move around 1's and 0's

Brainlet detected. LITERALLY the investigation report found that the wiring was original, something like 24 years old, and was cracked/frayed in a few spots. The high voltage ran alongside low voltage. The high voltage arced to the low voltage.

This particular plane was known for power outages and surges during operation.

>it's 2018
>i have to fix this myself
*Sigh*

mechanical failures are often repetitive and endemic to certain parts or structures in cars, aircraft etc. Thats why there are recalls from the major auto makers and YES....aircraft manufacturers...But I see your leaf and underestand that you have the mechanical accumen of a BOLIVIAN SANDAL MAKER.

Nobody every said that the cabin is unpressurized. I think you have a fundamentally flawed idea of how pressurization works for an aircraft cabin.

And we do turn off packs when sitting on the ground waiting for our release or for any other reason.

Here's a checklist for you. Packs as required for departure (often times near MTOW 2+3 are off, pack 1 is on and the APU is on to provide it bleed air.) Packs are then turned on after takeoff as indicated by the checklist, if all 3 had not been on for departure.

forgot the image

Attached: packs.png (374x304, 28K)

Here is the image i think that was in the french paper

Attached: Kabotphoto181.jpg.w560h770.jpg (560x770, 81K)

That's literally the boeing factory standard checklist, first off, not the UPS one.
Also, why wouldn't you just run all three packs off of the APU for a bleeds off takeoff? Especially in the -8.

Attached: packs.jpg (2785x1650, 431K)

It was a missle and Even go one step deeper! Jet engines run on Compressed Air! Not fucking jet fuel! Jet engines are even started by compressed air starters. The amount of fuel they say it takes to fly the craft is way too much weight and the fucking hydrallics in the wings eliminates the volume of fuel they say is in the wings! This is your free fucking energy they are hiding from us!!! Look it the fuck up before they take this down like every time!!!!

>no identifiable shrapnel punctures
Fuel-Air explosion in center fuel tank confirmed

Attached: mh17-wreckage[1].jpg (1180x787, 402K)

kikes did it

You are right, but it was theorized that a short circuit allowed excessive voltage. I'm just going off of what I read in the NTSB report, which is publicly available for reading. We see similar short circuits surprisingly often in the form of faulty gear bay overheat warnings.

>90's

MKULTRA called, and you better fucking answer

that's clearly birdshot from a shotgun shot at it after fact

That's the Malaysian plane that was shot down over Ukraine.

>murder conspiracy thread
>bring up Trump
Y doe?

>that was a joke

It sure as hell wasnt a fuel explosion. No fuel explosion has ever made a plane do what twa 800 did after the incident. Whether it was a missile or a bomb on board I can’t say for sure but I’m partial to the missile theory.

Why was it covered up? I honestly can’t say. Being honest about fuck ups is always the right thing to do.

Attached: 21DA9518-21A7-4A36-B97E-9F7508ACE1EF.gif (460x381, 90K)

That twa flight was over a well known naval training area. Lots of traffic and the navy did maneuvers there sometimes in the summer. The plane was shot down...... in the fucking summer. And a navy ship in the area sped AWAY from the shot plane at 30-40 knots. Pretty damn fast.

That’s what makes me think they accidentally hit the plane because hey didn’t pay attention to the altitude ceiling Of their training exercise.

Afterwards the aviation officials were kept off the investigation and the fbi muscled in and kept the observers and well everyone else as far away from the evidence as they possibly could. Something is fishy as fuck about the whole thing. If it was a fuck up why not tell the truth. I really don’t get it

d'oh

cnn.com/videos/bestoftv/2013/06/20/ac-hughes-flight-twa-800-cause.cnn

Missiles don't hit aircraft. They also don't go for random cold spots. They either go for an engine, or strategically go for the cockpit. In both cases the missile explodes near the aircraft, using shrapnel to incapacitate it. Stop watching Hollywood movies.

Because at the time the US could do no wrong as we were God's gift to mankind
You state that enough and it breaks the fuck down and people dont beleive it.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok

I don't have a copy of the UPS checklist on my computer? I could happily get it for you, but it says the same thing anyway. Packs as required before takeoff, on after takeoff. Add me on discord if you'd like and I'll try and get it to you. I'm Kippy#0163.

Also, I'm not sure what you're trying to prove with that image. We always fly with 3 packs on at UPS after departure, which I take it is what they're referring to. You'll see the 200 guy below talking about turning packs off during cruise - not something that we do in the 400 or the -8.

Why not run all three packs on the APU? Can't tell you to be honest. APU provides enough bleed to power 3 packs, but that's not one of our procedures. Our configs for packs are 3 on, 3 Off, 1/APU Bleed or 1/Engine Bleed.

Attached: DKCaQEjVoAEQNB-.jpg (1200x799, 52K)

Nope. Most of the guys around me are.

Go get your ratings! It's never too late. Thanks for your work on the ramp. Not possible to do our jobs without you.

Fair enough. I was just curious. I've only ever flown 2 pack airplanes. You can MEL one, but you always have both on otherwise. One of the Boeings I've flown has the same "as required" but that's because they are three position switches and you'd never have one off unless it's broken.
How long have you been at UPS?

Since '08. Had previous 74 time from Atlas. Fuck Atlas.

Attached: 36674282403_5bddc5e368_b.jpg (1024x683, 179K)

I wouldn't want to work for Atlas, I'll say that. They seem to be going crazy with the Prime Air business though.
How is the flying at UPS? Do you get domestic stuff on the 747 or are you doing mostly Asia?

a lot of regional guys are going to atlas. Seems majors won't give them a call otherwise... either that or spirit... I'm not sure what I want to do.
>t. updating his AirlineApps after 5 years

Lots of Asia via Anchorage and Honolulu. I've got to be honest and tell the truth though - I love it.

Attached: 1531531.jpg (1100x745, 412K)

Go Atlas. Fly heavies for low time!

Don't stay at Atlas.

I did longhaul for a few years. It was nice to make 20+ hours in 3 days but it beat me up. I'm doing 1 day trips these days, much easier on the body. Plus I gained a bunch of weight doing longhaul.
I know more than a few guys that did that. I had a friend that was doing the job fair circuit the other day and was told by the Spirit guy that they don't like people with PIC time because they tend to leave.

Already got my 1000TPIC121...
I still might do it.

I think it's like a 3 year upgrade on the 767.

Attached: Egypt Air 804 fire ball.webm (1280x720, 357K)

Can anyone make a 9-11 style pic with a bunch of missiles hitting the plane?

>trying this hard

Attached: 1517451313875.jpg (570x587, 43K)

Do you like being a freight dog? Why not fly Pax and make $20,000 more?

Attached: 1514118597046.jpg (1200x994, 722K)

UPS and FedEx make a ton of money and don't deal with downturns as badly as the passenger airlines. They were the places to be for most of the 2000s.

Why would you run on APU when you have bleed air from all the engines during takeoff. APU should be shut off when not needed and most struggle when up in the air to start/run due to less oxygen. They aren't like the main engines and aren't designed for super long runs.
Granted I haven't worked on a new 47 and mostly have 37-8/7s at work but I'd think most of this still applies.

t. aircraft mech

Attached: 1524004309490.png (576x613, 382K)

I always got the impression from my pilot cadet friends that you made a ton more money flying passengers as opposed to freight. Not to mention the hot stewardesses you'd sleep in the same hotel with between long haul flights.

>47, 37
I know where you work ;)
If you are heavy and need the most thrust possible you use the apu during takeoff instead of the engine bleeds. After you reeduce to climb thrust you turn on the engine bleeds and shut down the apu.

Only if you work for a small carrier or a dump like Kalitta. FedEx and UPS were the highest paid US carriers from 2001-2010ish. Also, once you start flying mainline airplanes the Flight Attendants are mostly older women and men and usually don't stay at the same hotel.

He's next.

Ah okay, I'm not really versed with heavy jets, also you probably don't know, there hasn't been a 47 at the facility since they sold a hangar. 37s are really more my specialty as I'm stuck with them all day everyday for the last year and a half. I'd kill for a 67, 57 to drop in just to kill the monotony

Attached: 1415398565343.gif (189x189, 273K)

I meant weight, not aircraft size. Even the RJs have to do this from time to time. An example would be a narrowbody departing SNA (Orange County, CA). Short runway, so you need more thrust. Having the Bleeds on reduces the thrust the engine is capable by a slight amount.
On the bright side, the 37s are all brand new and don't have as many problems as the 57 and 67. Probably makes work more dull but easier. You ever work on Airbuses?

There is an Atlas 747 that flys over my house everyday at about 5:30 ~ 6:00 pm EDT

It's probably a scheduled flight then. Does it have a blue globe on the tail or a gold one? The gold ones are for passengers, not cargo.

diversion so slick willy could genocide yugoslavia & secure reelection.
