It really is interesting, such long term stability in mitochondrial DNA. It makes sense that males have been more mobile throughout history. Males would conquer a territory, take over and breed with the females, but their offspring would retain the mitochondrial DNA of the mother. The only way a complete replacement of mtDNA occurs is if the females are slaughtered alongside the males. This doesn't appear to have happened in this region, the women were allowed to live - perhaps even prized. The same thing appears to have occurred in the R1b expansion that wound up replacing the males in ancient Basque country. The women survived, and since it is women who do the bulk of teaching language to their offspring, so did the Basque language isolate. But the men were probably replaced.
