We can't let such conflict occur again. My father is 1/4 Irish and I remember him always telling me how lucky he was to have been born on the 17th of March because it meant he could celebrate his birthday, then celebrate St Patrick's the day after. Both of them back to back, haha! Anyway, think of all the great things our people have given us. Opera, jeans, that's just Italy! My Mom used to cook various dishes from all over Europe and her Paella was delicious, god bless Portugal! She is 1/2 English by the way, and often talked about wanting to visit some day. That inspired me to visit her homeland and I booked my trip to Saxony a few days ago! No more brother wars goddammit!

I've always thought it was really distasteful as a foreigner in a country to try to imply you have any claim to "in-group" status due to ancestral ties.

IMHO, you have to be born in a country to claim to belong there as an entitlement, and otherwise: your status as a "local" is measured by how many natives embrace you as one of their own.

OTOH, if you're born somewhere and spend the majority of your life living elsewhere, to a limited extent you have forfeited your claim to "native" status.

No amount of Deutsch lernen, will ever make me German (even slightly) regardless of the ties I have to that country. I will NEVER know what it was like to grow up in Germany, and I would never pretend to. I love Germany, but I'll never be more than a tourist.

In fact, your ancestors turned their back on Germany and emigrated to the US. I would think that their conscious decision makes it clear that you have no claim to being any kind of German. If you came to America for the last 2/3rds of your life: my Turkish cousin would have more entitlement to claim the German cultural heritage as his own because he has spent his entire life in Germany.

What makes you German is the same thing that makes you American: a shared connection to history. Someone who had ancestors who fought for Germany in WW2 justifiably feels more German than someone who didn't.

When we pull out of NATO, it will bring me no happiness to see the negative consequences this will have on Germany, but I'm much more concerned about the financial stability of MY country than I am about your country's national security. Whiteness is a part of the Anglo-Saxon colonial legacy. It was how the settlers defined themselves. Ultimately this was the template for how all Americans defined themselves, and apart from having a "good family", the only other important condition is that you were white.

The thing is, being born to a German immigrant family automatically meant that you came from a "bad family" because Germans were and undeniably according to Donald Trump still are the enemies of the United States. Trump was a man who had to lie about his German family and claimed they were Swedish. Not surprisingly, something that isn't valued isn't kept. So nobody learned German as children and nobody married Germans or kept German traditions. In the end, the German-Americans just passively accepted this without even a thought for what had been taken from them.

I went to Munich and it was way more pure of culture than Paris or London. Or Rome even.
