Within the next ten years, the US Space Force will begin landings on bodies of our solar system. It is due a proper hymn (as all other service branches possess) to announce their arrival.
Lunar facilities will be required for initial mining, science, and security goals. There will be two bases: one on each pole. They will have large telescopes†. Those telescopes will scan the sky for asteroid threats to the Earth, and eventually will be made a defense†.
†The defense will be high-powered lasers shot through exquisite optics. You can use laser ablation to gradually adjust an asteroid's orbit to miss the earth. It can also be used in a tight beam to fatally damage spacecraft in seconds. In the end, once the bases are built and operational, they can allow or deny access to space for any nation on Earth.
So, start thinking up a Space Force Hymn worthy of such a military branch.
It may very well also take on some duties that result in it being something like a space version of the coast guard. As we progress towards significant private activity in space, the need and utility of such things will become very apparent.
No, there just hasn't really been a for the government to set one up. The thing is that we're now getting to the point where people might soon (in a relative sense) be able to head up and make a colony of their own accord.

interesting point about private entities in space.
I wonder if gov tech has more than they let on and they anticipate private industries getting into space at a more involved level in the near future.
Trump is either just goofing or they know more than we do.

Not song/hymn related too much, but I feel like this scene is important to the future of space domination.
So SpaceX plans on doing the first test flights of the BFR early next year. The BFR, if everything goes as planned, will be able to lift 150 tons to LEO for less than $10 million. That opens up some extremely interesting military possibilities. A 5 ton projectile hitting the ground at ~half orbital velocity is equivalent to 7 tons of TNT. So a single BFR flight can deliver 210 TNT tons equivalent on a target. Compare that to the venerable B-52, which can only carry 35 tons of bombs. And those kinetic projectiles would basically be unstoppable once launched, as they would be solid hunks of metal & ceramics. This would be the perfect weapon to destroy high-value stationary targets, like all those 'islands' China is building in the South China Sea, or Iran's nuclear material processing facilities.
Also we cannot get past the firmament. Space is a spiritual/astral realm

while i do like the concept of the space force. currently having it be coast guard, navy of space makes no sense. one of the major functions of the coast guard and navy is to ensure ship lanes are free from trackiffers and smugglers. At present no one is trafficking or pirating anything in space.
now if we have lunar and martian bases we will inevitably start having space trains(cyclers) which can be hijacked and need to be guarded but thats 100s of years from now
>Blood Upon the Risers It's a start, it definitely applies for orbital-deployed troops. They're going to have much worse survival odds than even WWII paratroopers in heavy flak.

They're literally just splitting space command and probably parts of the nuclear deterrence from the air force so that space command troops don't have to waste time with expeditionary training and duties.

Except not much attention has been paid to the fact that the US Military will soon have a serious ride to orbit and beyond >youtube.com/watch?v=eomhvZ9ooeI Without that, your expectation is accurate. But that's going to change soon.

this people are thinking its going to COD:infinite warfare. we have to be able to manipulate gravity to get to that level where you can send ship the side of a destroyer(7000 tonnes) into space
but thats nuts when you think about it, bfr max capacity is 150 to 200tones and a destroyer is 7000 tonnes, you'd need 35 trips minimum from earth just to bring material to make a destroyer in space
