Many years ago there was a video showing horrid conditions at these lettuce farms. They had port-a-potties slapped in the middle of lettuce patches, port a potties that had major leaks mind you. They showed sludge flowing out of them directly into the lettuce patches. These plants are literally feeding on wetbacks shit & urine, no amount of washing will clean the stuff absorbed directly into the vegetables.
