The last times were Chad until 2009 and Afghanistan until 2014 unless I'm forgetting something.
They're useful because their casualties don't really count as "the boys" in the public opinion, because they sign waivers and many of them are foreigners.

Here is the problem, Hans. They’ll autistically require C1 knowledge of German to serve, meaning except for Austrians, Swiss, South Tyroleans, some Dutch and Poles nobody who us not German will be able to serve.

The whole discussion is a front for brining back the draft anyway. As far as I understand, the goal is to bring back a Norwegian style draft in which only a handful of 18yr old men and women are drafted, mostly the ones signalling they are actually willing to serve 12 -24months for Germany. That is by far the cheapest way to get to 210,000 active soldiers by 2025 from the current 180,000.
