Imagine that society was a living organism with different organs inside of it. The number one purpose of an organ is to perform a function within the body in order to sustain it. In order to perform its function, the organ consumes energy from the body. However, said organ is also fully dependent on the rest of the body to function properly. When an organ (or parts of it) starts to grow out of control and overtakes the body, it is referred to as a cancerous tumor. When the organ is exterior to the body and does not depend on it; it is not an organ, but rather a parasite.
Businesses represent an organ within society. Their purpose is to provide goods and services for the greater good of society. In return, these businesses require material compensation (money, assets, etc.), However, these businesses must also be part of and dependent on the society they serve, otherwise they become parasitic (faceless international companies). They must also only grow and function within the boundaries beneficial to society as a whole, otherwise they become cancerous (massive companies basically in control of society). The capitalist principles of an unregulated "free" market have allowed companies to become cancerous tumors and parasites upon society, leading to its rot and decay. However, despite all of this, the tumor depends on the body to survive, and when the body dies, so will the tumor.
Whether or not we should let it die depends on which stage the cancer has reached, and at the moment it seems terminal.

I'm legitimately starting to think that hunter-gatherer was the optimum way to manage a society.
There were less than 150 members in a tribe, so you actually knew everyone. Wars were less bloody because tribe members dying represented a larger percentage loss to the tribe. You were also sending people you actually knew to the fight, not "other peoples kids" like today. Since population densities were low, you could just leave if another tribe was causing problems. Intra-tribe crime was low because, again, you probably personally knew the victim.
Obesity was practically nonexistent. Disease was unlikely because of low population density (the truly deadly diseases for Native Americans were brought by Europeans). Life expectancy was still between 50 and 70. Strong cultures were maintained for centuries. People lived in partnership with nature instead of in dominance over nature. There were a lot of benefits.
I have a hard time believing these people were really worse off than the people of today, who slave away for the benefit of people who they will never meet and under circumstances that are completely divorced from those that we evolved under (i.e., sitting at a desk in a windowless cubicle for 8+ hours a day eating shit for food).

In terms of happiness, no probably not, such a thing is relative you know. I think comfort, not starving, not getting nasty illnesses, these things are basic improvements to the human experience. In some ways it damages us, but generally speaking, quality of life improves while happiness is still your responsibility.

Japan's main problem is their lack of spirituality and empathy/value for family and friendship, which I frankly view as a racial difference between Europeans and east Asians more than anything. But as far as their system of governance goes I have never felt safer and more secure than anywhere aside from Japan, and they do it without an excessively authoritarian method or curbing of civil rights.

I'm not sure but isn't this a more modern issue with Japan? I don't think they were always like this. I feel like a lot of these issues would dissolve if they returned to some of their traditional values (women staying at home for the kids instead of going for careers etc.) I mean imagine taking most women out of the work force. Wages would skyrocket and people wouldn't have to spend as much time working. But the capitalist machine demands for workers, and so it gets them, even if at the cost of the family unit...
