A store can legally detain you if they have "reasonable suspicion" you are shoplifting. Refusal to show receipt is reasonable suspicion; that's why they do it in the first place.

You can if you want to, but if they start thinking you're stealing shit they follow you around the store and eventually they call the cops if there's evidence you are, which sets you up for a nice prison cell.

Also depends on your store. I live in a pretty rich white area and nobody stops you on the way out the door unless it looks like you're trying to just walk out with a big ticket item. Costco and BJs still check by policy, though, and you wouldn't want to cause an issue with them because they could terminate your membership.
