Read Scott McCloud's Understand Comics because most of it just about the relationship between the eye, the brain and pictures and words. He basically makes a point that combine pictures and words has the biggest impact in the human brain.

The book is old, he doesn't quite call it a meme but it's more like how we understand memes, as ideas and concepts repeated in different forms.
