There wasn't much financial incentive for the original colonists to come over either they were just trying to escape persecution. SolarCity was bankrupt before Musk took the 3 billion he got from Model 3 orders to bail out the company. Tesla got the shaft because he didn't use the money from the pre-orders to actually make the cars.
The whole valuation and investment of Tesla is about economies of scale which the Gigafactory is supposed to provide, except the actual battery technology that musk is creating is to create more than the worlds current production capability of 'last generations' battery technology
So the gigafactory is macking batteries that only Telsa/Powerwall would ever use, defeating much of the economies of scale if the company goes under before it can all playout, so US/Germany/Japan/Korean cars will all get newer safer (less explodey in car accident) batteries
The self driving technology that Tesla has is now also several technical generations behind the top of the line competition, and while no other car company is willing to risk as much autonomy as tesla, they could do so safer

TLDR; Musk manages to con investors into buying shoddy commodity crap and keeping his companies afloat with the power of his ego

Solar City never panned out because of how it was structured.
First it was limited to a few states (read between the lines...states with solar rebates)
Second, the problem with solar was it's useless at night, you needed a battery to havest any extra power, but Solar City was around pre-gigafactory.
Outside of SolarCities control, regulation turned against solar, loss of rebates, many states had laws that the power companies had to buy back excess power at retail price from a customer, but they changed that to 'wholesale' price in many states, which makes the math not work out as well
Fourth the whole you don't own the thing you put your house is kind of a non-starter for most people, not much interest in a 20 year agreement to a house you'll probably only live in for 10, doesn't look good to try and saddle any incoming buyer with that agreement, or somehow buy your way out halfway through
Fifth, solar panels were too expensive for most homeowners even with the 'cost sharing' agreements

To get a pound in space costs around 10 grand, which is a shitload of money. The normal rate would be at least below the 100 dollar mark considering it's space but even lower would be better. The only way you could THEORETICALLY could do that is 1) You had an anti gravity technology and 2) space elevator, which you haven't had these 2 breakthroughs yet and not even close to achieving them. Now Elon comes and says ok we got a more feasible technology to get this work, and the only way he could do it is by goverment grants, so taxpayer money. Now there is 0 economic gain to be had in space for now, so it's not that he is getting us anything back so it's purely for scientific purpose. Unless SpaceX comes with a groundbreaking technology than he can keep his promises, otherwise it's just a glorified private space shuttle service to ISS and satellite launching, which we had done for 50 years now.
As far as electric cars go mate, you won't solve shit with them. First you need to create energy, and it's bloody easier just burning the fuel rather than turning it to electricity and then charging up your car first of all, second it just survives on being "cool" points as it offers absolutely nothing interesting, thirdly lithium batteries aren't efficient, have short range and are toxic to dispose of. So no, that South African dude isn't proposing a revolution, since this isn't a fossil fuel crisis, this is an energy one, and you just say ok this is going to keep the environment safe which in itself is complete bullshit.

SpaceX is cash-cow right now with lots of money coming in from contracts every month with their reusable rockets. It needed help to develop perhaps but now NASA spends WAY less to spend people up to space. There's also lots of satellites being deployed, it's not only "tax payer money" and it's well earned money for SpaceX, so it's not a welfare queen (Israel still holds that title, very fun thinking your money is spent to kill children and create jew-only colonies).
