The thing that really made ISIS different was its marketing, specifically on social media to pull in recruits from around the world. Once the ISIS Director of Communications guy got killed in an airstrike, ISIS started to decline immediately. Never underestimate the power of marketing.

ISIS was really just a coalition of Islamist groups who flew the ISIS banner. The downfall of the Islamists really got fast tracked when Trump's pentagon ended the arming of Islamic groups in Syria. Supported the overthrow/coup in Saudi Arabia for the new crown prince. In supporting Bin Salam he had to agree to end and take out the biggest supporters of militant Islamist in Syria. During the latest operations in South Syria the Islamists gave up faster than any other time during the war. The Assadists allied Army/ Militias where handed over so much equipment. There were so many American TOWS (anti tank wire guided rockets). The problem was they just stopped getting ammo. Can't fight without the ammo. I think ISIS was given so much attention in the West media so people who are extremists would go flock to the war. Much easier for governments to take out high risk citizens. Thousands of westerners died in Syria/Iraq. Only a few dozen ever made it out alive.
