the only purpose of a canvas is to better commodify an artwork. It then becomes an easily moved product which you can buy and hang up in your home. There's nothing sacred about some cloth stretched over a wooden frame. I'm not advocating spraying graffiti all over Rockefeller Center, but I'll tell you what — even amateur graffiti is better than condemned buildings and urban decay.
I used to like graffiti art a lot more than I do now. Back in the day, pre-internet, there used to be distinct styles in each part of the country, and it was a lot of fun to see what everybody was doing on their own. Since the internet, everybody sees and is influenced by everything, and unique styles and traditions have all disappeared. People aren't even concerned with the lettering anymore, which is the ESSENTIAL part of graf. They just half-ass some letters, do a fancy gradient and a lot of highlights, and then paint some clunky portrait next to it.
If graffiti is turning into portraiture and other traditional styles of art, then frankly, there are much better artists to look to.

yup graffiti is more or less mainstream now and you shouldn't let its 'street culture' persona fool you – it's turned into a business like everything else.
Masking tape can be useful but mostly it's can control and use of spray caps. If you're doing it illegally, then there's no time to be setting up tape or cardboard. You've gotta be able to put down a clean line fast and by skill alone.
Most of the caps Montana or the like will sell aren't necessary though. People have different specific preferences, but what it boils down to is a fatcap for fills and a skinny cap for details. Higher-end paint is better, but especially if you're just starting, or if you're just gonna paint niggers around town, old-fashioned Rustoleums will do. Don't pick colors like yellow – colors like that are expensive to make opaque. Cheap blacks will still be black.
Rustoleums and Krylons are the time-honored brands, but mostly because of how easy they are to steal from your local hardware store.
