This completely. No other translation comes as close to being a perfect English version.

Translations with contextual and historical explanations and commentary. Quran is written in high Arabic with lots of analogies, obscure biblical stories and references, open-ended rhetorical questions, and some seemingly conflicting Surahs. It’s difficult to crack even for native Arabic speakers.

Pickthall's is as close to a perfect English translation as there will ever be.

it's actually pretty bad compared to sahih international, uses many expressions where there is a word for it. and i can tell the translator is not very fluent in literary arabic

Point taken on literal translation, but Pickhall captures some of the beauty of the Arabic. His command of classical Arabic was very good; his goal (as a convert) was to convey some of the literary beauty of the Qur'an to English speakers interested in Islam but with little or no knowledge of Arabic. If you know Arabic already, any translation will be flawed in some way and, if you are Muslim, you will know that the Qur'an is untranslatable without introducing unacceptable error for that very reason. What you will find in online translations and ones like Sahih will get you the gist of a verse, but that is not the same as reading the original and knowing both the historic context and any related authoritative tradition of your favorite religious school.

The quran is very repetitive to the point it becomes painful to read, it's not really beautiful.
Compared to many arabic works as modern as the 20th century, it's not even half good.
Be honest with yourself when you read it and don't bend the words.
I am highly literate in arabic, much more so than any sheikh will find.

And that is the case with ALL TRANSLATIONS, between ANY TWO LANGUAGES, but you can convey the meaning perfectly and elegantly enough.

You can safely ignore any translation that modifies the instruction to beat your wife (4:34) with anything other than straight up beating your wife. The classical Arabic is very explicit about beating your wife if she doesn't obey after 3 warnings.

I respectfully disagree regarding beauty, but that is of course subjective and it sounds like you have a wider personal context and history with both the text and what it represents than perhaps I do.

This is a great point. If the translation hides some of the very unambiguous verses it is very likely very unreliable. This is unfortunately very common with almost all English language translations since the mid-20th Century.

It's actually better seen as a very bad take on Nestorian Christian beliefs repurposed to attack native Arabian idolatry. Islam is a child of Christianity, not Judaism.
