First the Germans forced him to serve, than he got captured by the Russians and released 2 years after the war. The other one was too young to serve and life on the country side wasn't that bad during the war. He enjoyed the candy from the Americans

Both served in the Wehrmacht One was from the Sudetenland, fought and died in the east, but my grandmother never talked about the specifics.
The other was from Austria, fought in Poland, France, Norway and later again in France. He made it out alive, his favourite warstory was when he lost parts of his ear from a bullet, but it didnt hurt as much as he expected. He always said he liked the war but what came after was horrible. He was captured by the Mutts and later transfered for forced labor in france. He hated the french to his dying day, and referd to them only as Bimbos and Abschaum.

One great grandfather was drafted 1938, besides 6 weeks vacation he was always on the frontline as a railway pioneer. First the occupation of Czechoslovakia, then Poland and France. Later russia, among other battles, the siege of Leningrad and Sevastopol. In late may of 1944 he got ordered to France. A few days after D-Day he and his whole squad got wiped out by a british air attack.
Another great grandfather was too old (early 50) to be a soldier but was a SA local group leader and got lucky that they didn't executed him after the war.
Another great grandfather was a painter and mainly sprayed camouflage on planes on a local airfield. He died 43 through cancer, the paint they used back then was toxic as fuck.
Then I had 1 great uncle in the SS, all I know is that they used an armored train to kill partisans. Another great uncle was a pilot, got shot down over the english channel, survived but wasn't ready to fly afterwards, he ended up in british pow camp in norway. He often told us that many Kameraden died through starvation and sickness, they had to sleep in earth holes on a open filed. When they released him he had to walk all the way back to Germany.
My grandfather returned after 6 month of war and 10 years of war prisoner, he saw many strong and powerful man perish in Russia while the slim and smart ones survived. Got a lifelong trauma from it.
While the other one served the whole war and only told his kids about the joy of stealing cigarrets and people freezing their asses shut in Finland

One of my grandfathers was a POW in England, the other was a POW in Russia. One great-grandmother & great-grandfather died in Dresden, the others I don't know if they survived the war or not. Their whole family was expelled from Poland to the GDR. On my father's side I have no clue except that my grandfather was captured by the Soviets and died from his injuries when my dad was a teenager. My dad died when I was a baby so I never knew him.

One of them got drafted in 1941 and fought to 1944 on the easten front (Leningrad,Narew, Mogilew, Minsk), his division got shattert in Operation Bagration, but he still made it back the the german lines. After his division got re-activated he fought on the western front (Ardennes and the Ruhr pocket), until he got captured in 1945. Dont know about the other one.
Maybe a year or two from what I`ve gathered, I was young when he died of natural causes, and as a kid thats not really what you ask.
Thx for the condolences, but if anything I am proud of him, both my grandfathers served their country, as did my greatgrandfathers before them, both for the Kaiser ( allthough different ones). But due to the long peace in Europe that family tradition has been broken.
Eh, not much, my great grandfather was a soldier in the 20th SS division. Was in the Battle of Tannenberg line and Narva. apparently killed 5 Commies lol, can't confirm tho, he killed them from a long distance away, but he saw at least 1 helmet/hat pop off from a Commie, so that's that. Apparently, he smuggled his own hunting rifle into the SS, because he wasn't comfortable with German rifles (could be true, could be false, idk). He hated the Germans, though, because his Father (my great great Grandfather) got shot by a German in the Estonian Independence War. He survived the war and did a bit of Guerilla fighting in the Estonian forests. He was eventually caught and sent to Siberia, though, where he died.
Now that the roles are reversed with Trump as Hitler and Merkel as Roosevelt, I think it's time for German Americans to declare war on Germany! We will start WW3 for you guys, this time!

One was a career officer, fought in Greece and France, perhaps other theaters as well. After the war he was imprisoned in France. He could play the piano and entertain Germans and French, which provided him with several amenities. Returned shortly after the war and lived until the 1980s.
Other one got drafted and fought in the East. Wounded and suffered from head injury until he killed himself in the late 1960s.
