Tesla makes a loss on every car they are selling. I don't know how much, it's speculated to be in the thousands of Burgerbucks per car.
He can do that as long as the gibsmedat from Big Gov keeps flowing, but it's going run dry as Big Gov runs out of other people's money.
The problem with Tesla is that you can't bootstrap technology that doesn't exist. Electric cars suffers from all the issues concerning batteries and if he had a solution there he would go straight into the battery business and make money selling shit to everything that needs batteries and let the conventional car companies dealing with the vehicles. Tesla's plan of optimizing current tech here and there is simply not feasible.

Not true at all. They make profit on all their expensive models and multiple groups have done a teardown of the model 3 and have found that Tesla makes profit on it as well
They only make a profit on the Model S because it is heavily subsidized and the only reason the Model 3 makes a profit is also because of government subsidies and Tesla refuses to sell the $35K base model version. And despite all of that, Tesla itself still has yet to turn a profit.
