He was a congressman. But basically the guy represented the part of San Francisco the People's Temple and most of its members were from. So he started getting a bunch of letters from their families asking him to investigate Jonestown. He arranged a visit with Jones. Jones, knowing there was a lot of suspicion surrounding him, allowed the visit hoping he could put together a good looking show for the congressman. During his visit though, some of the members secretly arranged being taken back to America with the congressman. When Jones figured this out, he knew his goose was cooked if he let them get away, so he panicked and sent out a squad to kill them all to prevent word getting back. After that he realized of course that by doing that he had only made the inevitable even worse and there was no way he was going to get away with it. So he told his followers America had gone fascist and were sending the army to exterminate Jonestown so they would kill themselves with him

-He went there and did so with the media despite not initially getting permission

-Whilst initally ok with this (as it was just one guy) once that was started other people wanted to leave.
-Whilst this happened a former marine member grabbed the congressman and held a knife to his throat incencesed at them trying to ruin the community.
-this guy is tackled and disarmed, despite this the senator still considers overnighting it at Jones town (they needed an extra plane because so many people wanted to leave ) is eventually talked out of this.
-Jones had been rehearsing/carring out mock suicides and even "attacks" by fascist mercs (getting his son to fire shots into the commune) for quite some time before all of this

They dont, Jims Jones power came from a public association and his personal assistance - initially he had an extremely good civil rights record (to the point where had he died early on he would have been famous as part of the second tier civil rights activists) and not only had money to donate but most importantly was able to provide huge multiracial crowds for campaigning. Just finished Tim Reiterman's "The Raven'. If you have any interest in Jones or Jonestown at all, it's a must read. The dude was a journalist who was there when the shit went down and was shot on the airfield. The book's worth it for the last couple chapters alone.

Just finished every book I could find on Waco. This seems like a good next read. Although I'm just gonna say in advance that I doubt I have any sympathy for these guys. Whereas the branch davidians story is tragic. It's an almost unbelievable. With jonestown I've never been able to understand the psychology of those inside. And it's always bothered me that Jim Jones is considered Vernon Howell's equal. I can't buy that. Jim seems like the devil incarnate. David was just misunderstood. Hopefully this book sheds some light on this.
