During his lifetime most ordinary Southerners who were drafted to fight for their slave owning "betters" knew how bad the war really was (the Civil War was only slightly less bad then World War I) and somewhat appreciated that Sherman was the guy who really ended it. His army was only really unnecessarily cruel in South Carolina and Sherman could not have stopped that if he wanted to. Every Union soldier wanted revenge because they started the war.
